Wikipedia article County Seat:
History: Washington County, Tennessee began as the District of Washington (a part of North Carolina) in 1776. The county designation was granted in 1777. A portion of the district along with a portion of Surry County, NC were formed into Wilkes County, NC in 1777. Washington County encompassed the territory west of Wilkes County (between Wilkes, the Virginia line, the hunting grounds of the Cherokee Indians, and the Mississippi River). It was named in honor of George Washington. The county seat of Jonesboro was named after Willie Jones and was established in 1779. A portion of Washington County became Sullivan County in 1779, and portions of Washington County became Davidson and Greene counties in 1783. Other areas of Washington were annexed to Sullivan County in 1788 and Wilkes County, NC in 1792. Carter County was formed from Washington County in 1796.
