Wikipedia article County Seat:
History: Tennessee County (formed in 1788 from Davidson County, Tennessee) was named after the ancient capital of the Cherokee Indians. The county seat was Clarksville. The town was laid off in 1784 by John Montgomery and Martin Armstrong on a parcel of land for which they had entered a claim. The town was named after George Rogers Clark. Clarksville later served as the county seat of Montgomery County. Upon the admission of the state of Tennessee into the Union in 1796, the county of Tennessee was split to form Montgomery and Robertson counties.
